Alleged Sextortion in Key Carbon Off-setting Project in Kenya

Corruption Type

Sextortion

Findings by the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) and the Centre for Research on Multinational Cooperation (Somo) allege that senior men abused their positions to demand sex in exchange for promotion to higher positions in the company and preferred treatment. In one account, a senior staff member persuaded several of the rangers’ wives to have sex with him, allegedly telling them that their husbands’ jobs were at stake. The report stated that extensive sexual abuse and harassment happened by male staff between 2011-2023.

The Kasigau Corridor conservation project is operated by the California-based firm Wildlife Works, which generates carbon credits approved by Verra – the world’s leading certifier of carbon offsets. Companies, including Microsoft, Netflix, Mckinsey, Shell and others, have bought carbon credits from this project.

The Kasigau Corridor conservation project is marketed for contributing to women’s empowerment in the area. Wildlife Works apologised for the harm caused and suspended three people in connection to the allegations.
