Brazil's Environmental Minister Caught Up in Illegal Logging Case
Corruption Type
Collusion, Undue Influence
In June 2021, Brazil’s Environment Minister Ricardo Salles, resigned after the country’s Supreme Court suspected him of obstructing police investigations into illegal logging. The Court saw evidence that Salles was trying to cover up a “serious scheme” to cut down and export illegal forest products. Deforestation in Brazil has been continuously rising over the last years, despite government commitments to curb logging of its highly climate-relevant rainforests.
