When Italy’s government launched a programme to boost investments in the country's renewable energy sector, criminal organisations soon wanted to get in on it. Colluding with politicians, they secured contracts for windfarms through kickbacks. This not only cost the Italian state money through irregular contracting processes, but also lead to some windfarms being built in suboptimal locations, which ultimately reduced their positive environmental impact.
