CSO's Legal Win over Illegal Hydropower Permits
Corruption Type
Undue Influence
In 2018, the regional governor of Aceh, Indonesia, granted a hydropower company the right to use the region's protected forests for its operations. National legislation only grants forest-use permits to public facilities of up to five hectares – this, however, was a bigger commercial facility. In response, Transparency International Indonesia formed a coalition with local civil society organisations (CSOs) opposing the project's development within protected forests and filed a lawsuit. Transparency International Indonesia assessed the transparency of the power company, investigated its ownership, carried out national-level advocacy and succeeded in court so the licence for the project was withdrawn.
