Ohio House Speaker arrested amidst US$ 60 Million Bribery Charges and passing a Law bailing out Nuclear Power while pushing back on Renewables

Corruption Type

Bribery, Undue Influence

Date: July 2020

Prosecutors allege that the former Ohio House speaker Larry Householder and four men indicted alongside him received over US$ 60 million in bribes from FirstEnergy corporation and its subsidiaries, through an entity believed to be controlled by Mr. Householder. Shortly after being selected to the Ohio House as speaker, he passed HB-6 – a bill that experts say has led to higher bills for consumers, less green energy, and more CO2 emissions. It is alleged that thanks to HB-6, FirstEnergy got US$1.4bn of subsidies for two of its ailing nuclear plants. FirstEnergy pleaded guilty to its role in the scheme, agreeing to pay a US$230m penalty.
