Organised Crime's Role in Italian Wildfires
Corruption Type
Fraud, Collusion
As drought and extreme temperatures are causing wildfires around the world, these devastating events are often exacerbated by corruption. In Italy, organized crime gangs are suspected of being responsible for several wildfires in 2021. The syndicates may have committed arson for several reasons, like trying to pocket public reforestation funds or “clearing” areas for lucrative business projects, including renewable energy projects. While Italian legislation does not allow for a change in land use in the 15 years after a fire, enforcing these laws is up to local authorities’ discretion, opening the door to potential corruption.
