Leading global anti-corruption organisation moves to strengthen U.S. presence

Transparency International, the global movement dedicated to fighting corruption, announced today that their U.S. office will become an independent U.S. national contact. This is an important step on the path to becoming an official chapter and towards strengthening Transparency International’s presence in the country.

TI U.S. will now join the more than 100 independent chapters in countries around the world that comprise the global Transparency International network.

Gary Kalman, executive director of Transparency International US, said:

“This is an exciting step that will allow us to build upon our early successes here and establish an independent U.S.-based anti-corruption organisation while continuing to leverage the expertise and experience of the global network.”

Transparency International re-established a presence in the country in 2020 as an office of the German-based international non-profit. The organisation’s leadership and U.S.-based staff have been working together in the years since to create a robust, independent U.S. operation.

Daniel Eriksson, CEO of Transparency International, said:

“An autonomous organisation in the U.S. will allow the Transparency International movement to more effectively deliver our ambitious global strategy, considering the country’s important role in global finance. We are grateful for the work of our colleagues in the U.S. and congratulate their achievements in recent years, including successfully advocating for the renewal of the landmark anti-corruption Global Magnitsky law last week. We look forward to continuing to work closely with them as a national contact.”

TI U.S. will continue with its current focus on policy development, research and advocacy to stop corrupt officials from laundering money and benefiting from the U.S. financial system; strengthen U.S. democratic institutions and practices; and encourage the U.S. government to be a strong ally in global anti-corruption initiatives.

In 2021, the TI U.S. office published a comprehensive anti-corruption agenda for the U.S., Combating Global Corruption: A Bipartisan Plan, and has made significant progress toward implementing that agenda over the last year.
