TI launches innovative new conventions website

Transparency International (TI) today launched the first civil society web site dedicated solely to international anti-corruption conventions in the Americas. The site, initially available in English and Spanish (a Portuguese version is in the pipeline), will be an indispensable resource for those policy makers, academics and civil society organisations in the Americas concerned with enforcing international legal mechanisms as a tool for fighting corruption in the region. This is a priority for Transparency International as the leading global non-governmental organisation devoted to combating corruption world wide.

"Since 1996, when TI in the Americas began lobbying for the ratification of the Inter-American Convention against Corruption, we have led civil society efforts in our respective countries to convert legal instruments such as the UN Convention against Corruption and the OECD anti-bribery Convention into real tools for fighting corruption. Our new web page harnesses current, detailed and substantive information and promotes the contributions of civil society organisations from across the continent" said Valeria Merino Dirani, member of TI's international Board of Directors and Director of Corporación Latinoamericana para el Desarollo, TI's National Chapter in Ecuador.

The new website details the content of the different conventions, their associated monitoring mechanisms and the role that civil society in the Americas has played in the drafting, ratification, follow-up and promotion of the conventions. Visitors to the site can also find regularly updated news articles related to the conventions. It also serves as an online community, brining together individuals and organisations dedicated to maximising the potential of these conventions in fighting corruption. After visiting the new site, Gustavo Gamallo, Executive Secretary of the first Inter-American Democracy Network (IADN) stated, "TI's Americas conventions website will be an invaluable resource for our network as we promote democracy in the region."

Nancy Zucker Boswell, also a member of TI's international Board of Directors, and Managing Director of TI-USA, offered her view, "This web site will undoubtedly become a 'must visit' for all those individuals, organisations and government representatives, and many others, who have a shared commitment to seeing full implementation of these anti-corruption conventions in our countries."
