Transparency International calls for adherence to international aid standards in Gaza relief efforts
In the face of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Transparency International stresses the crucial importance of humanitarian organisations adhering to established international standards in the distribution of aid. Relief efforts must be grounded in humanitarian principles and a steadfast commitment to transparency, integrity, and accountability towards those in dire need.
Lack of transparency and integrity in the distribution of humanitarian aid exacerbates the suffering of the most vulnerable, depriving them of access to essential life-saving resources. To guarantee an efficient, fair and adequate response, all humanitarian agencies operating in Gaza must align with the United Nations humanitarian principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, and independence in their aid-distribution programmes. Organisations undertaking such efforts should guarantee that aid is distributed without discrimination, solely based on the urgency of needs and the degree of vulnerability.
Transparency International has developed Guidelines for Preventing Corruption in Humanitarian Operations designed to enhance the integrity of aid distribution, ensuring that resources reach those who need them most.
François Valérian, chair of Transparency International, said:
“In the midst of a humanitarian catastrophe, the need for effective provision of aid to the people in Gaza is more critical than ever. Transparency and integrity will enhance the delivery of life-saving resources to those most in need. Organisations working in the field must be transparent and accountable to protect and take care of the most vulnerable. Humanitarian assistance must be distributed efficiently and with integrity, while upholding international aid standards.”
